By Sherwinn "Dupes" Brice — Dupes Did It Music
Let me tell you something about the California Gold Rush that changed how I look at this whole music thing.
Back then, everybody packed up and ran west chasing gold. Most of them came back with nothing but blisters and stories. But you know who did well, steady? The folks selling the shovels. The picks, the pans, the boots, the supplies. They didn't need to strike gold. They just needed people digging.
Now look at music today. Everybody's chasing streams. Everybody's chasing the algorithm, the playlist, the one viral moment that's supposed to change everything. And I get it — I've been in this game a long time. The dream is real. But chasing the gold alone? That's how a lot of talented people burn out broke.
So I decided to sell the shovels.
The day I learned the hard way
Let me take you back. Early in my career, I gave a beat to an artist. Simple thing — I trusted them, I wanted to help, I wanted the music out there.
A few weeks later I'm hearing my beat... as a cell phone company jingle.
No call. No paperwork. No payment. Nothing.
I was hot. I went to everybody involved — the artist, the people around them, anybody who would listen. And at the end of all that? I never got paid. Not one dollar.
But here's the thing. That moment didn't break me. It woke me up. It gave me a confidence I didn't have before — the confidence to say, "If nobody's going to protect my work, I'll build something that does." That's how I started my first label, Platinum Underground, in the early 2000s.
That lesson stuck with me through everything since — co-writing "Done" and "Different Energy" with Kisha Kay, and being a credited writer on Lu City's "Let It Go" featuring Machel Montano. Credits matter. Paperwork matters. Owning your audience matters. Nobody tells you that when you start.
So here are the shovels
I put together three short, practical guides. Five dollars each. No fluff, no hype — just the tools I wish somebody had handed me back when I was giving away beats on a handshake.
1. The YouTube Growth Guide YouTube is still one of the best places for an independent artist to build something real. This guide walks you through how to grow a channel with intention instead of just uploading and hoping.
2. The Split Sheet Pack If I had a split sheet back in the day, that jingle story might have ended differently. This pack gives you ready-to-use split sheets so every song you make with somebody has the ownership written down before anybody gets excited. Do it in the studio. Do it every time.
3. The Email List Playbook Followers can disappear overnight. Algorithms change. An email list is yours. This playbook shows you how to start one, grow it, and actually talk to your fans in a way that feels like you.
Why five dollars?
Because I want these in as many artists' hands as possible. Five dollars is a patty and a juice. It shouldn't be the thing standing between you and protecting your music.
And if you're already part of my Patreon family — you get all three free. That's my thank-you for riding with me.
Dig smart
I'm not telling you to stop chasing the gold. Chase it! Make the music, drop the songs, go for the streams. I'm still doing it too.
Just make sure you've got the right tools in your hands while you dig. Protect your splits. Own your audience. Build your platform on purpose.
That's the shovel. Go get it.
